JUNE 2009
June 5th-6th - Lambda Iota Omega participated in Hall County's Relay for Life to celebrate cancer survivors and to raise money for cancer research. The chapter raised over $2000 through community donations and fund raising efforts. A special thank you to all who gave of you time and money to support this worthy cause. May 2009
May 23rd - Lambda Iota Omega took The Toxic Tour of Gainesville, Georgia hosted by the Newtown Florist Club. The members of the club noticed a rise in various cancer related deaths after a storm that leveled the area and homes were rebuilt near chemical plants and over a junkyard. Lead by environmental activist Faye Bush, participants learned about toxins, dioxin, chemical emissions, air pollution, and other such problems caused by industries located within just a few blocks of the Newtown Neighborhood, a predominately minority area. APRIL 2009
April 25th - Lambda Iota Omega hosted our annual Dinner Dance and Scholarship Fundraiser. Honorees were community service and environmental activist Ms. Faye Bush and long member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and community servant, Mrs. Alphia Wills. Additionally, our 2009 Young Scholar Recipients Jade Okafor and Chelsea Doyle as well as our 2009 Rising Spirit Student Mother Recipient, Quinshalia Faulker were honored. Many people from Hall County and surrounding communities joined us as we celebrated student and community leaders while raising money for future scholarship recipients. MARCH 2009
March 28th - Lambda Iota Omega hosted our annual High Tea: A Big Hat Affair, themed "Heart, Health and the Pursuit of Godliness". The speaker was women, children and working poor advocate Soror Brenda James Griffin. During this event attendees donated over $300 benefiting Hall County Relay for Life to help raise money for cancer research. FEBRUARY 2009
February 16th - Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority from across the state of Georgia descended on downtown Atlanta to attend our Sorority's 16th annual AKA Day at the Capital. Sorors had the opportunity to sit in the House Chambers while they learned about various bills that are relevant to our Program targets including funding for healthcare, education, and transportation. Speakers and luncheon guests included various state senators, representatives, judges and county CEOs. Our Sorority was commended for our get out the vote efforts with Sorors registering over 11,600 votes in the state of Georgia alone. JANUARY 2009
January 31st - Lambda Iota Omega hosted their first annual Teen Summit for Young Ladies. The theme for the summit was "A Promise to Protect My Mind, My Body and My Future". Soror and other community members conducted discussion forums on various relevant topics for young women today including effective communication, importance of education and protecting yourself and friends. The summit ended with a commitment ceremony where the girls made a promise not only protect themselves but to serve as role models for their peers. January 19th - Lambda Iota Omega answered the call to service on by handing out snack bags at the end of the MLK Unity March at the Butler Center in Gainesville, GA.
Several members of Lambda Iota Omega went to Washington DC to view the historic inauguration of the nations first black president, Barack Obama. Remembering that it was still a day of service, Soror Marsha Stringer took the opportunity to create care packages and write letters to soldiers serving over seas.
